Director Receives Distinguished Leadership Award

 

MARATHON, Ontario – On May 9, 2024, at their Annual Conference & AGM, the Ontario Public Supervisory Officers Association (OPSOA) presented Director of Education Nicole Morden Cormier of Superior-Greenstone District School Board with the prestigious Distinguished Leadership Award. This esteemed accolade recognizes outstanding leadership in public education in Ontario, particularly highlighting leadership that intentionally fosters equitable outcomes for all students.

 

The OPSOA Distinguished Leadership Award is bestowed upon a member who has demonstrated exemplary leadership beyond the expectations of day-to-day responsibilities, grounded in principles of human rights and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action.

 

Chair Pinky McRae commended Nicole's transformative leadership characterized by “an unwavering commitment to equity, inclusion, and meaningful engagement with underserved communities, both within Superior-Greenstone District School Board and across the province of Ontario.”

 

Nicole's leadership has profoundly influenced human rights and truth and reconciliation within the education system, particularly through her efforts to uplift historically marginalized communities, including Indigenous peoples in Northwestern Ontario through the development of relationships.  Her proactive approach on addressing systemic biases and facilitating discussions on equity has created an environment of accountability, empathy, and understanding.

 

Under Nicole's leadership, Superior-Greenstone District School Board was one of the first school boards to activate a Human Rights and Equity Advisor and expand the Mental Health Worker program in all communities, providing vital support to students in need. 

 

Nicole's commitment to Truth and Reconciliation is evident in her leadership in supporting the creation of a Truth and Reconciliation Policy and Policy Guidelines within SGDSB.  By acknowledging systemic biases and fostering open dialogue, her leadership promotes and demonstrates the urgent need to provide a safe and equitable learning environment for all students.  Additionally, Nicole's partnership in the Anishinaabemowin Boodawe Committee underscores her dedication to language revitalization and cultural preservation. 

 

Furthermore, Nicole's collaboration with the Anishinabek Education System to co-create and implement the Engagement Framework emphasizes responsiveness, relationship-building, and open dialogue to meet the specific needs of Indigenous students.  Her leadership during unprecedented times, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, underscores her commitment to prioritizing the needs of marginalized communities and promoting equal access to opportunities for all students.

 

Nicole's visionary leadership, dedication, and tireless advocacy have reshaped the educational landscape, creating a more just, equitable, and inclusive environment for all students and staff within the Superior-Greenstone District School Board.  Her influence towards human rights and truth and reconciliation serves as a powerful reminder of the transformative impact of committed individuals.
